Kylie Whiteside Bats 1000
Longview, Alberta cowgirl, Kylie Whiteside, enjoyed a 4 for 4 weekend as the talented two eventer collected a first-place finish at Hanna and a 4th at Oldstoberfest in the barrel racing, then combined a second place breakaway roping cheque at Olds with another 4th at Hanna to complete the four-spot.
"I was pretty over the moon happy and excited about my weekend,” Whiteside commented. “And looking ahead at Edmonton (Pro Rodeo)... it's going to be a real nail-biter this weekend. I just want to try to do the best I can do and let it all play out.”
The $3700 total payoff vaults the 22-year-old into the heart of the battle for the final CFR barrel racing qualifying spots and could very well secure her return trip to Red Deer’s in the breakaway roping as well.
With just one week remaining in the 2022 Canadian Professional Rodeo season, central Alberta tie-down roper Clayton Smith took a big step toward clinching his first season leader title as he bested the field at Oldstoberfest with an 8.5 second run. His $1891 cheque padded the long, tall roper’s lead atop the standings with only the Edmonton SMS Equipment Pro Rodeo Tour stop left on the regular season calendar.
There are several tight races, both at the top of the standings and for the final CFR qualifying berths that could be decided this week during the two performances in the provincial capital.
One of those saw former Canadian saddle bronc champion, Layton Green, extend his lead over second place man, Logan Hay, with an 87.5-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s Oney, good for $1433. The Meeting Creek talent will carry a $1500 advantage into the final weekend of the Canadian regular season. And at the other end of the leaderboard, the final qualifying berth in the bronc riding is another race to watch as CFR veteran, Dawson Hay, leads Miles City, Montana challenger, Houston Brown by just $234.
And another Canadian bronc rider, Sherwood Park’s Kolby Wanchuk, captured the prestigious Pendleton Roundup title as he rode the famed Black Tie for 90 points in the finals for a 174.5 total on two and a slender one-point margin over fellow Canadian, Dawson Hay.
With the season rapidly drawing to a conclusion, there are six Canadian bronc riders, including both Wanchuk and Hay, in the select 15 that will be heading for Las Vegas, an all-time high.
Reigning Canadian bull rider, Jared Parsonage, took a huge step toward punching his ticket to the NFR as he won the New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo with an 85-point ride. The $4702 payday vaulted the Maple Creek cowboy to 9th place in the standings as he vies for his first-ever trip to the bright lights of Vegas.
Tune in for results, highlights and updates as the final regular season event, the Edmonton Pro Rodeo, approaches. Scheduled for Sept 23-24, the SMS Equipment Pro Tour stop offers athletes the opportunity to start earning points toward the 2023 Pro Tour standings.
