Shayna Weir CFR 2018

Shayna grew up around horses, and comes from a rodeo family with multiple relatives competing at the CFR, so her love of rodeo came naturally. It all began in high school after borrowing a horse from her Uncle to take to a Dee Butterfield clinic. After purchasing her first barrel horse she began high school rodeo and then continued her career into the amateur rodeos, where she qualified for the Foothills Cowboys Association and Lakeland Rodeo Association Finals in 2010 and 2011. As soon as she filled her pro card, there was no turning back, and her sights were set on a Canadian Finals Rodeo qualification.

After winning the Rocky Pro Rodeo, qualifying for the Ponoka Stampede Showdown, being a K-Days Rodeo qualifier, Finning Pro Tour Finals qualifier, a Grass Roots Finals qualifier, and taking home $26,876 after 40 rodeos, Shayna Dodds Weir is finally headed to her first Canadian Finals Rodeo.

She will be bringing to the finals, Moons Dyna AKA Dyna who is by Moons Handsome Bug (by Honor Lady Bug) and out of Red Hot Gem who is by Red Hot Lena. Dyna was purchased from Chad Muldoon the fall of her five year old year when Shayna was on the hunt for a new rodeo horse.

What quirks does your horse/horses have?
She does not love people. She keeps to herself and doesn’t want a lot of attention and she spooks at about everything.

How would you describe your horses barrel racing style?
Dyna turns very tight and very hard so you have to ride hard into every pocket. If you let up your probably knocking barrels.

What things do you want people to know about your horse(s)?
She may not like attention but she loves her job. She works well indoors and outdoors but the bigger the pattern and the trashier the ground the harder she works.

What was your favourite rodeo this year and why?
Ponoka Stampede I have always wanted to qualify for the showdown and this year I hadn’t expected to be there after the run I had in the long go. It seemed like it was a long shot in making it back. Things went right and I made the short go and then the showdown. It was definitely an amazing feeling running with the atmosphere that Ponoka has!

We all know that being competitive takes serious mental strength. What do you do to keep a sharp mental edge in the game of rodeo? How do you stay motivated throughout the season?
I try and not focus on the bad runs I will give myself a short amount of time to analyze them and then I put them out of my mind and move on to the next rodeo; its better to focus on the positives. Each rodeo is a new day and it needs to be treated that way.

What does your feed program look like, keeping your horses in peak condition going down the road and even in the off season?
I like to keep it simple. My horses get hay and grain and are supplemented with Purina Equilibrium Optimal and Purina Pur-Athlete feed.

What do you do to condition your horses leading up to the season, and what does your pre CFR routine consist of?
I do a lot of long trotting and sprinting out in the field. I like to keep her and myself sharp so we will go to a couple jackpots before CFR.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been told regarding life, horses, rodeo or barrel racing?
The best advice I was told came from my father “its not what you roll in with, its what you leave with.”

What has been your most memorable run over the years?
Running in Ponoka’s showdown round this year. Even with a knocked barrel it was an incredible feeling to run in the finals and clock one of my best times.

If you could make a run on any one of the other CFR qualifiers horses which one would you choose and why?
Carman Pozzobon’s Ripp. She is very talented and looks like she’d be fun to run.

Who is your barrel racing idol?
I don’t have just one, I believe in learning from everyone.
What is the one thing you cannot live without on the road?
Energy drinks!

What are you looking forward to the most as you head to the 2018 Canadian Finals Rodeo?
That first run and the feeling of coming down that alleyway.
