Kendra Edey CFR 2015

Headed to her third Canadian Finals Rodeo in the Number 3 position, is Kendra Edey. She competed at 43 CPRA rodeos taking home $25,462.46, aboard two full brothers that were raised at their Stampede Ranch,  TS Halos Captain, (Captain), and TS Halos Cat, (Cat)  who ironically each made the same amount of money for the 2015 standings. (Colonel San Peso going back to Peppy San Badger X TS Astro Halo going back to Bar Hemp) If you haven’t been paying attention at the rodeos this year, you may recall Kendra from Rodeo: Life on the Circuit show from back in 2011. ( I really hope they bring this show back again, I enjoyed it!)

Do your trusty steeds have any quirks?
Captain can get a little hot when it is barrel racing time, and if he isn’t ready to go in the arena, I have to wait a second or two. If I get after him, he will do a little stomp where we call it “Get Low” He will stretch out his front legs and do kind of a cat stretch to where my feet are almost touching the ground, stomp his front feet a few times, then he is good and ready to run after that. Cat will get fired up right before a run if I hand walk him near the arena, he stomp his back feet, and kick out a time or two. It is kind of my sign that he is really going to fire!

How would you describe their style?
Captain is freaky fast, and is super quick and powerful. He loves to run. If I am not on the ball, there is a good chance I could be out the back of my saddle! Cat is turny, and very smooth. I love how I can run him at the first barrel as hard as he can go at those big outdoor pens and totally trust him.

Has your routine changed with your horse as you prepare for CFR?My routine hasn’t changed a whole bunch, just not having rodeos to go to, to keep them rodeo fit is the only challenge. I hardly ever do barrel work, I like them to love their job, and keep it fun for them. I have a little circuit up west behind the ranch that I use as my exercise program. We long trot for awhile, lope some circles, hill work, then cool off as we come down the trail through the trees. Sometimes I haze steers on them, and to change it up I will bring a few steers in the arena and track them pretty much full out speed to keep them cowy, and using their feet and bodies properly.

What has been your favorite Canadian rodeo this year and why?
Every rodeo is my favorite rodeo! I just absolutely love to rodeo!

What is the best piece of advice you were ever given regarding barrel racing?
I’ve been given alot of advice over the years from great, and successful people, and there are certain pieces of advice that fit into certain places. I think the most important thing is to not get so wrapped up in competition that it becomes not fun and stressful. Do it because you love it, and because you want to. Do it for you, and for your horses. Just try to do the best that you can do, and be the best that you can be. At the end of the day, you will know you gave it your best shot, and that is better than sitting on the fence never knowing what was possible.

With all the miles made, varying ground conditions, and expenses, what kept the CFR dream alive for you?
Knowing we had CFR made after Strathmore was huge. It took the pressure off, and I was able to just truly enjoy rodeoing, and not have to rodeo my ass off either.

What is one thing you can’t live without on the road?
Morning coffee, and Pepsi for sure!

What are your favorite pair of cowboy boots & favorite lipstick, lip gloss or lip chap?
My favorite cowboy boots are my Johnny Ringos. They are different looking than everybody elses boots, and I think that a persons boots gives them character:)
I am not much of a make up person, but when I do wear it and go out, I like to wear my bright red lipstick called Seduce by Cover Girl.
