Shelby Boisjoli-Meged - 2023 World Champion Breakaway Roper
Call it even.
A few weeks ago American superstar tie-down roper, Haven Meged came north and won the Canadian title, his first. Today his wife, Canadian-born Shelby Boisjoli-Meged claimed the World title in the breakaway roping at the South Point Equestrian Centre in Las Vegas. That makes it US 1, Canada 1 in a family that truly is a rodeo power couple.
Boisjoli-Meged finished the final five rounds of the Breakaway Finals today and actually increased her lead over second place cowgirl Hali Williams to just under $40,000 as she amassed $197,706 for the season, including a record-setting $33,157 haul at the Vegas Finals.
The classy cowgirl was consistent over the two days of action, placing in six rounds, including two firsts and a second place finish in the aggregate.
Kendal Pierson of Wardlow, Alberta had a strong finish in her first-time qualification for the WNFR. On day two, the two-time Canadian Champion displayed the form that won her back-to-back Canadian titles, placing in four rounds, climbing to eighth place in the aggregate and finishing the year as the 11th ranked breakaway roper in the world.
All in all, it was a tremendous showing by two outstanding cowgirls with a Canadian connection and just might be a precursor to an exciting week for Canadian and CPRA affiliated competitors at the 65th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
