Kylie Whiteside - CFR 2023

Kylie Whiteside is an incredible cowgirl who competes in both the Breakaway and the Ladies Barrel Racing, and competed at the Canadian Finals in both events last year. This year she is competing in the Breakaway Roping after winning $14,116.95 after 41 rodeos, winning Leduc, Sundre, and High Prairie. This year she rode the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association two-time, Breakaway Horse of The Year, Hott For Teacher, aka Teacher, who is by Spots Hot, out of Peppys Sytlish Lena.

What is your main mounts back story?
Teacher is owned by Ben Bamford and I was very lucky to be able to ride Teacher this year. The first run I made on Teacher, I was instantly in love with roping on him. I felt he helped make everything I needed easier. I know he is going to do his job I just have to do mine.

What quirks does your horse have, and what quirks would you say that you have?
Teacher is a sweetheart to be around, I wouldn’t really say he has any quirks.

What has been your most memorable run this year, and what made it memorable for you?
My most memorable run this year was the first round calf at Wainwright. I set a goal that I wanted to make it back to the second go and it always feels good to be able to achieve your goals you set.

What was different about your rodeo season this year compared to last year or other seasons? -Did you face any challenges this season? Tell us about them.
This was the first season I was able to ride Teacher. I do believe your horse power is very important so to be able to have a horse like teacher under me was huge help. I had lots of ups and downs as everyone does most times. I really struggled this year to climb out of my slumps.

Tell the readers something good that happened to you this season, other than placing at, or winning a rodeo.
Well, I have usually always stole my parents LQ trailer, so I was very excited to have bought my own LQ trailer this year.

Who is your travelling partner, and what do you enjoy most about travelling with them?
I travelled with my sister Bradi. Not only is it nice to have a built in travelling partner, but it’s almost like having a packing partner as well. I love knowing that we will always be there to have each other backs, and help each other out whenever we may need it.

What is the best advice you’d give to readers, about horses and or competing?
I think something to always remember is your horse is a very important part of your success, and I always try to put them first.

Favourite Canadian rodeo this year, and why?
My favourite rodeo is Armstrong. I love the atmosphere there.

Which of the other CFR Qualifiers horses would you swing a leg over if given the chance and why?
I’d want to ride Bullet owned by Shaya Biever. He’s so solid and just goes out there and does the job every time.

What products can you or your horse not live without on the road?
Well I’m pretty attached to my dog, I don’t go anywhere without her so I’d have to say, Cola.

Mental game; what do you do to stay sharp, and shake the nerves of competing?
For me confidence is key. I just have to know that I have put in the work before and I just have to go do the same thing I have been working on at home. Keep it simple and focus on one run at a time. I try to let each run be in the past and every run is a new one.

What is your coffee order?
Caramel steamer with extra caramel, and a shot of vanilla.

I would like to thank my family and sponsors for everything they do for my horses and me.  Canyon Rigging, Western Lifestyle Insurance, Kailani sports, Back On Track Canada, Eberglo Vitamin/Mineral, and BI Canada.
