Bradi Whiteside - CFR 2023

Bradi Whiteside is competing in both the Breakaway Roping and the Ladies Barrel Racing, for a second year in a row at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. Bradi finished sixth in the Breakaway standings, and ninth in the Barrel Racing standings.

The Whiteside sisters are truly some of the best horsewomen in the industry, with many years of success in their futures.

Main Mounts registered name, barn name, pedigree:
Preppies Bit of Jazz aka Riddle, by Preppies Last and out of Our little Grace.
Slicks Sweet Legacy aka Sis, by Slick By Desgin and out of Bars Sweet Legacy.

Breakaway horse is Hott for teacher aka Teacher by Spots Hot out of Peppys Stylish Lena.

What is your main mounts back story?
Riddle was my first ever futurity prospect, I bought him from Jack and Kelly Hart as a coming two year old and have done everything myself with him which makes him very special to me. He taught me so much in his futurity year and he continues to help me achieve my goals.

Sis was my first well bred mare that I had ever got. I bought her from Travis and Johanna Dobbs as a 4yr old. Ever since I have stepped on her back I knew she was going to be special to me. She has helped me achieve many of my dreams.

Teacher, the horse I breakaway rope off, is my boyfriends horse, Ben Bamford. A few years ago I started roping on him the odd time. Last year was the first year he became my main breakaway horse ever since then he continues to make my job easy and work great every time I back him in the box!

What quirks does your horse have, and what quirks would you say that you have?

Sis is one of the most miserable horses to be around, she’s the “go to work type” of horse. Does not like to be loved on. Although she is sweet when she knows I have a treat for her.

Riddle is very heard bound and spooks at a lot of things.

Teacher being the easy going rope horse that he is, doesn’t have any quirks!

What does it mean to you to have Teacher be the Horse of The Year, two years in a row?
This is very special to me, I’m thankful for the opportunity to ride such a great athlete. I can always count on him no matter it be a short score or long he always works! Thank you to Ben for having such an amazing horse and letting me use him.

What has been your most memorable run this year, and what made it memorable for you?
My favourite run would be both my first run in barrel racing and my first calf in the breakaway at the Calgary stampede, to be able to compete at the greatest outdoor show on earth was one of the best feelings.

Did you face any challenges this season?
This rodeo season had its challenges. For almost 2 months both Riddle and Sis weren’t feeling themselves. After giving Riddle time off in the middle of rodeo season he finally came back to himself. Thanks to the help of Energy Equine, we were able to figure out what was wrong with Sis and she came back way stronger. Unfortunately out at the BC Rodeos she strained her stifle and will not be able to come to the CFR with me.

Tell the readers something good that happened to you this season, other than placing at, or winning a rodeo.
Well this doesn’t start out good however, when Kylie and I were on our way home from Langley BC we broke down just outside of Revelstoke thank you to the people that pulled over to try and help us but, a big shoutout to Sam Smith and Rachel Warren who helped get us and our horses off the side of the highway and to a safe place in the middle of the night. Thankful for great friends. The rodeo world has so many great people in it.

Who is your travelling partner, and what do you enjoy most about travelling with them?
I’m thankful to have a built in traveling partner. Kylie and I usually get along great although we do have our disputes. Having someone to talk to about how are runs went may it be what we learned from it or what we need to better is something I try to never take for granted.

What is the best advice you’d give to readers, about horses and or competing?
You have to have a positive attitude for there to be a positive outcome.

Favourite Canadian rodeo this year, and why?
My favourite CPRA rodeo would be Armstrong, the atmosphere at this rodeo is so loud and fun!

Which of the other CFR Qualifiers horses would you swing a leg over if given the chance and why?
I would pick Karli Cowe’s horse Fling, I love this horses style plus she is incredibly talented and fast!

Who has been your barrel racing/rodeo mentor and what is something they’ve taught you?
There is so many people that I look up to in the rodeo world. I have learnt several different things of watching and paying attention to what true champions do and what they all have in common is a good attitude. They know that they always have another run and not to hang onto the past.

What products can you or your horse not live without on the road?
Well to be a realist it would be my cell phone but also my dog Kipp, she comes everywhere with me.

Mental game; what do you do to stay sharp, and shake the nerves of competing?
Mental game can be tough when you’re rodeoing and sometimes feel that nothing can go your way. For me to stay sharp I always think back to why I do it, I do it because I love it. Also concentrate on the task at hand, don’t worry about things you can’t control worry about what you can.

What is your coffee order?
Hot chocolate!

I would like to thank my family and sponsors for everything they do for my horses and I.  Canyon Rigging, Western Lifestyle Insurance, Kailani sports, Back On Track Canada, Eberglo Vitamin/Mineral, BI Canada.
