Kirsty White CFR 2016

The Number 1 Ladies Barrel Racer going into the Canadian Finals Rodeo is Kirsty White who ran at 40 rodeos and took home $30,195.31. She won Kennedy, Sk, Bruce, Alberta, tied for first in Merrit, British Columbia and won the first round of the Cinch Finals, all aboard her mare Special Tack aka Racey.

Racey is by Plain Special out of a Cutters Bonanza (Major Bonanza) mare.

Does she have any quirks?
She has a lot of quirks. She is sensitive, reactive and electric!

How would you describe her style?
She has a very correct style, turning on all fours like a four wheel drive. Racey makes huge moves.

With all the miles made, varying ground conditions, and expenses, what kept the CFR dream alive for you?
My horse. She never lets me down.

How do you stay healthy on the road? Do you exercise or just eat as healthy as you can?
Yes, I run and really try to eat green while on the road. I try to get lots of rest and exercise.

What are your favorite bloodlines for barrel racing?
Special Effort, Major Bonanza, Dash ta Fame, Raise a Secret, & Bugs Alive 75.

What qualities do you look for when looking to buy a young horse?

I look for a good disposition and pedigree. Correct legs, a hind end that can get in the ground, elevated front end and a frame that will fill out proportionally.

Riding a seasoned barrel horse, what exercises do you do for tune-ups on the pattern
Collection, collection, collection. I teach them to keep their legs under their body and have it be their habit. I work on softness in the pole and mouth, as well as speed control to keep them relaxed and happy with a great work ethic

Regarding legging a horse up, what is your routine?I do speed controlled work outs. Lope big, lope short, and then do slow work on the pattern.

We all know that being competitive takes mental strength. What do you do to keep a sharp mental edge in the game of rodeo?
I always meditate and use deep breathing as it expels the busy thoughts in my head and helps me react. I like to stay focused on each stride as it’s happening. I really give thought to the set up and be smart about how I approach it to give myself and horse the best opportunity to capitalize.

What is your go to product for keeping your horse sound for the season?
Our vet Ty Corbiel, Sharpe Edge Supplements including Happy Belly, Mare Mix, Joint Support, and especially the One A Day, would not go without it, it’s a great support for the immune system. Also like Trimax to keep weight on.

What do you do in the off season?
In the off season I head to Arizona to ride young horses.
