Bradi Whiteside CFR 2021
Our number three cowgirl is going to Red Deer with $13,934.12 in her jeans after 21 rodeos. Bradi Whiteside had a great year down the rodeo trail winning her first pro rodeo at Strathmore Stampede, as well as placing second at La Crete and High River Pro Rodeo. The 19 year old also had great success in the derbies, winning the 2021 Canadian Barrel Horse Incentive Derby Superstakes, taking home a cheque for $9,270.00 on Preppies Bit of Jazz (by Preppies Last).
You ran a 17.185 at the CBHI on Preppies Bit of Jazz, tell us about this horse?
Preppies Bit of Jazz aka Riddle is a very special horse to me, I bought him when he was a coming two year old from Jack and Kelly Hart. He was my very first Futurity prospect and is now becoming a rodeo horse.
What is your background with horses and how did you get started barrel racing?
I have grown up around horses my whole life since my Mom and Dad were into rodeo, so it’s something I just grew into.
What is your main mounts reg name and does he/she have any quirks?
My main horse is Slicks Sweet Legacy (by Slick By Design out of Bars Sweet Legacy x Rare Bar) and I would have to say the only quirk she has is she is miserable to be around but great once you’re on her back. However, Preppies Bit of Jazz is a close second to my main mount and his quirk would be that he spooks at the dumbest things, and is always whinnying.
What is your go to saddle, pad and bit on your main mount? What do you like about them?
My favourite saddles are Robbie Phillips and my favourite pads are 5 star. My go to bits are a short shank three piece Sherry Cervi and a medium shank Dave Elliott three piece.
What is your horses story? How did you find him/her, when did you know he/she was going to be great, ups and downs you may have had.
I got Sis when she was a 4 year old from Travis and Johnna Dobbs. Since then there has been lots of ups and downs which comes with seasoning a young horse. She is now 6 years old and we had are first rodeo season together this year and she handled it very well.
What do you do to keep a sharp mental edge in the game of rodeo? How do you stay motivated throughout the season?
Always looking at the runs I have ahead and never dwelling on the runs in the past. However my sister and I definitely keep each other motivated and encourage each other during tough times!
What does your feed program look like, keeping your horses in peak condition going down the road and even in the off season?
I like to keep it simple, I feed Trimax, Canpresso and Eberglo. Also lots of alfalfa.
What do you do to condition your horses leading up to the season, and what does your pre CFR routine consist of?
Conditioning my horses consists of tons of long trotting in the field and a bit of breezing them out. I also like to do hill work and lots of backing up.
What is the best advice you’ve been given regarding life, rodeo, horses or barrel racing?
Never give up on your dreams and keep it simple.
What has been your most memorable run over the years, and what made it memorable for you?
I have a hard time picking a run that would be most memorable, but if I had to pick, it would be Strathmore Stampede this year.
What is your favourite barrel racing bloodline, and what do you look for in a prospect?
I really have no favourite bloodline as there’s tons of great ones. In a prospect I look for well built, a kind eye and a willing to try personality.
What is the one thing you cannot live without on the road?
Well this one would be my sister, from the very start of us going to the pro rodeos, we have been there for eachother.
What is your favourite Canadian rodeo and why?
Although Armstrong didn’t have a rodeo this year it would have to be my favourite still. Although, they are all great!
Which of the other CFR Qualifiers horses would you swing a leg over if given the chance?
That is very hard to pick, but I think I would pick Hot Donna.
Who has been your barrel racing/rodeo mentor and what is something they’ve taught you?
I have looked up to lots of people and can’t just pick one. Learned lots from several different people.
What are your goals for 2022?
In 2022 a goal would be to get back to the CFR, however that is very hard to do so I will rodeo, have fun and see where it takes me.
Canada lost rodeo last year. What did you do with your time off, and what does it mean to you to have rodeo come back and to now be headed to finals?
Luckily last year there was still some Futurity/ Derby’s so we went to those, however rodeo to me is definitely a favourite so it was nice to be back in that atmosphere. To be headed to the finals this year is definitely a dream come true, I can’t wait to get there and take all the experiences in.
Thank you to my parents for all of their support. Thank you to all of my sponsors, I can’t thank these amazing companies enough. Canyon Rigging, Western Lifestyle insurance agency, Back on Track Canada, Eberglo Vitamin/Mineral supplement and Boehringer Ingelheim.
