Cayla Melby CFR 2015
This is Cayla Melby’s first year headed to the Canadian Finals Rodeo, and she is headed there in 11th spot, after going to 37 rodeos, and cashing checks for a total of $15,759.80. Cayla and her Mother Jane Melby, both qualified at the first RFD-TV The American Qualifier held in Canada last month in Calgary Alberta. Cayla actually qualified twice!
Have you decided who your main mount for the CFR will be? What are your horses style’s like?
My goal for 2015 was to join the CPRA and make the CFR with Calgary in mind. I won money on four different horses to get me to the finals this summer. Eyema Rare Bug, Candy’s Clone, LTF Jets Last Dance, & Brookstone Jo. Making it hard to figure out what to bring to the CFR. Eyema Rare Bug (Ima) 9 yr old brown mare, she’s like Ole faithful! Very consistent, same run everytime. Brookstone Jo (Brookstone) is 5 yrs old with limit runs, I’m 17yrs old, sometimes we get in to big of a hurry together. THC Lynard is a 6 yr old breeding stock paint, he’s also young but excels indoors. He’s really really fast and electric but a little tricky to ride. He might have to be my main mount. Cause nothing great happens when you hold back!
What was your favorite Canadian rodeo this year and why?
I won Brooks Alberta on RC Brooks A Streakin in 2013 to fill my permit. Then came back in 2015 on Candy’s Clone to win it again (outdoor rodeo). So I’d have to say Brooks is my favorite rodeo. Plus I’ve had two great horses with that name; BROOKS.
Has your routine changed at all as you are gearing up before coming back to Canada for the CFR?
My routine has definitely changed. Mom and I made a bet if we qualified all three horses in Calgary at The American Qualifier, we were going home. Mom was winning first, I was 9th, the top 10 qualify, and I’m the last barrel racer to run. When I crossed the time line I had tears in my eyes, I knew we were headed home to Burneyville Oklahoma. First, second and tenth the Melby’s were qualified! Going home felt like we went from an ice box to the frying pan. It was a 100 degrees Fahrenheit when we got home. The first few days all the horses wanted to do was bake in the sand. No more winter blankets, more like heat stroke. So I’ve gave them time off with basically just light exercising in the field. I’ll save the arena work for Edmonton and go around the barrels at the CFR. Im also a team roper so I’m been getting ready for the USTRC finals in Oklahoma City.
Whats the best advice you’ve been giving regarding barrel racing?
Ride up and around your turns.
Who is your favorite person to follow via Social Media?
My Mom Jane Melby
Who is your barrel racing idol and why?
Kassie Mowry has always been my hero since I was a little girl! I want to go to the NFR once, ride futurity horses, and have her success.
What are your favorite pair of boots and lipstick or lip chap?
Lucchese boots, and after looking at your Facebook page, looks like I need to find some Elf chap stick when I get back to Canada. My mom normally buys all natural chapstick along the way that’s made locally. Black Hills chapstick from Rapid City Sd is what I’ve had lately.
