Pamela Capper of Cheny, WA has been in the top 20 of the Womens Professional Rodeo Association since 2012, and this year she is finally heading for Vegas after taking home $87,504.76 from 63 rodeos.

Capper won $3944 at the Kennewick, WA Champion Challenge, won Canby, OR $2,444, won $3555 from Walla Walla, WA,  $12,800 out of San Angelo, TX winning the Final and the Average, took $5500 out of Houston, 2nd at Redding, CA Wrangler Champions Challenge for just over $3k, $6600 from Reno, NV Gold Tour, won Canby, OR for $2,444.00, won Pasedena, TX,  $2,039.80, & won over $8000 in Pendleton and won the final go round.

Capper’s main mount is Sheza Smooth Flight aka. Jesse who is by Dinner Flight and out of Lady Lasmooth a Smooth Move mare.

Does your main mount have any quirks?
Jesse doesn’t like anything over her head like flags, and when in an arena just riding around, it needs to be quiet. Music makes her think the race is on!

How would you describe her style?Jesse is a push style horse. I ride her with a loose chin strap.

What are your favorite bloodlines for barrel racing?
I like the racing Quarter Horse lines. The individual needs to be intelligent, athletic and have good feet. I am more partial to mares.

With all the miles made, varying ground conditions, and expenses, what kept the NFR dream alive for you?
I rodeo for a living so I keep going but mid-august I realized I managed to stay in the TOP 15. I tried to keep Jesse feeling good and get to rodeos that I felt would be crucial to compete at. I learned how hard this rodeoing is, so I would keep telling myself, “If if were easy, everyone would be doing it.” I had to make changes in my life to be able to rodeo full time, and I feel God has sent me on my journey that has resulted in Las Vegas.”

We all know that being competitive takes mental strength. What do you do to keep a sharp mental edge in the game of rodeo? Do you do anything before a run to keep your nerves in check?
I try to get enough sleep and review my mental game plan before a run. Positive thinking is a must.

What is your go to product or therapy for keeping your horse sound for the season?
I wrap legs every time Jesse is in the trailer, and like to ice her legs after each run.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given regarding barrel racing?
When I started training my own horses I was told, “Same thing every time.” To build consistency in my runs.

What would you like to see be done in the industry to better rodeo as a sport?I would like for rodeo committees to work together with their times and slacks so they can be worked on the same weekend.

I would like to thank my 2017 Sponsors Slone Saddles, Savannah 7’s, and All Terrain Fence.
