Where to Dine in Edmonton, During the CFR & PBR Global Cup

Edmonton, Alberta – If you’re coming to the city for the 44th Canadian Finals Rodeo or for the inaugural Professional Bull Riders Global Cup, you’re going to be in and around the heart of downtown Edmonton.

Instead of going to Boston Pizza, The Keg or Ruth’s Chris, I have compiled a list of some delicious restaurants you should check out, Lipstick and Cowboy Boots approved of course. All of which are within 10km of Northlands Coliseum and even closer from Rogers Place.

If you don’t feel like driving the dually downtown, I don’t blame you. Call an Uber. Download the app, it is SO easy to use and is cheaper than a cab. Plus you can watch on your phone how close they are to you! The LRT also runs downtown and is an option.

I have made this really handy for you. If you click the name of the resturant it will take you to Google Maps, but if you read through, you’ll find each restaurants website at the bottom of each write up!

You’re welcome!

Bodega Tapas & Wine Bar, 10220 103 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 4A1
5km from Northlands Coliseum
This is my favourite place in Edmonton. Opens at 4:30pm. Its small, but has a large group table in the middle. What are Tapas? They are shareable dishes. So the majority of whats on the menu, you order to share with the table. There are a few bowls for one, but get in on the sharing action! If you have me on Snapchat, you’ve probably looked at every dish on the menu. (Sorry for pretending to be a food critic hipster, taking photos of my food)
Favourite dishes on the menu include but are not limited to: Bacon Wrapped Dates, Patatas Bravas, Crimini Mushrooms, Angus Skirt Steak, Garlic Prawns, Piri Piri Calamari, and the beef and lamb Empandillas. To finish it off, I LOVE the House Passionfruit Cheesecake or the Crema Catalina.
At first the dishes will start coming out and you won’t think its enough to eat, so you keep ordering more dishes, and then once its time to consider dessert, you’re wishing you wore your thanksgiving stretchy pants. Just unbutton your Wranglers and get the dessert!
Fave drink here – red or white sangria. Both are delicious.
Parking lot is across from La Boheme, you won’t get towed, or street parking.
Website with menu –

El Cortez Mexican Kitchen + Tequila Bar, 8230 Gateway Blvd, Edmonton, AB T6E 4B2
8km from Northlands Coliseum
El Cortez makes you feel like you’re not in the North Pole, instead you made a run for the border and you’re in the heart of Mexico. They have weird but interesting video snippets playing on the wall, occasionally have a DJ come in, and ALWAYS have great tacos!
Favourite dish on their menu is the VALENTINA’S FRIED CAULIFLOWER with Aji Aioli Dip.
Fave taco there is the Cinnamon Braised Pork,
Fave drink here – Sangria.
Parking lot across the street.
Website with menu –

Tres Carnales Taqueria, 10119 100A St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 0R5
5km drive from Northlands Coliseum or you can take the train.
This restaurant was my first Taco love. It is small and usually has a line but they are fast and the food is worth the wait. Great option for those of you headed to the ladies fashion show at the Westin. Its within stumbling distance.
Favourite dish to start is the Papas Fritas, which is fried chunks of Russett potatoes topped with a guajillo chile chimmichurri, queso fresco and cilantro.
Fave taco is the El Pastor (Pork)
Fave drink here – you guessed it, the Sangria.
Parking – minimal street parking, but there is a parkade around the corner. I will cross my fingers CFR44 & the PBR Global Cup aren’t coming with a blizzard and forty below temps!
Website with menu –

Meat, 8216 104 St NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 4E5
8km from Northlands Coliseum
If all you want is a rack of ribs, fried chicken or smoked chicken, may I suggest Meat. They do have a few sandwiches as well. Sides are ordered separately. Its all delicious! You’ll leave with a full belly and the meat sweats.
Favourite drink here – Kentucky Mule (Bourbon)
Parking – find a lot and walk down Whyte, or test your luck and see if there is street parking.
Website with menu –

Sicilian Pasta Kitchen, 11239 Jasper Ave, Edmonton, AB T5K 0L5
6km from Northlands Coliseum (There is also a south side location if you’re staying on the south side of the city.)
If you want pasta, may I suggest not stopping at Olive Garden and checking out the Sicilian Pasta Kitchen instead? Seriously, you’ll thank me later.
My favourite dish was a lobster stuffed ravioli which I am not seeing on the menu, BUT, you could order anything on the menu and feel like you’re in Italy for the evening. Their in-house prepared tiramisu has been hailed as Edmonton’s best.
Website with menu –

Blue Plate Diner, 10145 104 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 1A7
5.5km from Northlands Coliseum
Dinner, Lunch, Brunch, Breakfast, and a kids menu, the Blue Plate Diner has you covered. Again, I have never personally been here before, but have always heard great reviews of the place.
Parking – there are pay-parking lots close by.
Website with menu –

Rose & Crown Pub, 10235 101 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 3G1
4.5km from Northlands Coliseum
Pub food, close to Northlands, with a dinner, lunch and kids menu, along with daily specials. Hidden gem I think!
Website with Menu –

Local Jasper, 11228 Jasper Ave, Edmonton, AB T5K 2V2
 6.5km from Northlands Coliseum
This is a bit of a chain restaurant, similar to Joeys or Earls but its a safe bet if you’re scared of everything else I have recommended so far. Kids are welcome here. Board games, shuffle board etc available to play while you wait.
Favourite dish here would be the Fried Chicken Sandwich.
Fave drink – Kung Fu Punch. Tastes like juice, packs a punch..
Parking – I believe there is a parking lot here, or street parking.
Website with menu –

Sherlock Holmes Pub, 10012 101A Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB T5J 0P5
5km from Northlands Coliseum
Pub food, around the corner from the Westin, so ladies who are headed to the fashion show, looking for a drink and quick bite to eat before the rodeo, this is a great option (as is Tres Carnales, its just a little longer walk.)
Daily specials, and brunch available for those who don’t wake up early enough for breakfast..
Website with menu –

Northern Chicken, 10704 124 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 0H1
7km from Northlands Coliseum
I have not been to Northern Chicken but have been recommended to go here. Judging by the photos on their website, I need to check it out ASAP.
Closed on Wednesdays
Website with menu –

Pampa Brazilian Steakhouse, 9929 109 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5K 1H6
10km from Northlands Coliseum or take the train
I have never actually ate here, but know many people who have and they all rant and rave about it. If you go to Pampa, let me know what you think!
Website with menu –

Rge Rd, 10643 123 Street Northwest, Edmonton, AB T5N 1P2
7km from Northlands Coliseum
Though I have not been here myself, I am still adding it on the list because this restaurant has been named #1 in Avenue Magazine for best steak and best overall restaurant in Edmonton.
Website with menu –

Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival at the Shaw Conference Centre
5km from Northlands Coliseum
If you’re looking for something else to do while in the city, check out the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival November 10th and 11th. Purchase tickets and pick which wines you’d like to try out, and some of the best desserts and appys.
Event tickets do not include food tickets. Must be purchased separately.
Website –

Eat Clean St. Albert
If you’re looking for a healthy alternative through out the week, I will HIGHLY recommend Eat Clean St.Albert. Dan and Stacey will meal prep for you and all you have to do is order. You can either pick up at their location or you can choose the delivery option. Check out their Facebook page or their website for all options!

Calgary Stampede Champions Crowned

Calgary, AB- The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth has come and gone for another year and what a show it was! Over one million people came through the gates onto the grounds by day nine, and 140,000 alone on day nine.

The Calgary Stampede committee was able to create perfect barrel racing ground to bless us with one hell of a horse race, showing us fast times all week and resulting in a new arena record, set by Tiany Schuster on Showmance.

The 2010 sorrel gelding who is by First Smart Money and out of Blue Baby Cash, (double Dash for Cash bred) was purchased by Christine Lollis as a three year old out of the Lance Graves sale and trained him. He was then purchased by Tiany and her boyfriend.

Over the ten days of Calgary, Schuster won $111,750 total earnings, with $61,750 counting towards the Womans Professional Rodeo Association standings (half of the $100,000 plus week earnings), allowing her to create a new season earnings record in the WPRA! I look forward to watching this duo inside the Thomas and Mack this December at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Texas cowboy, Cory Solomon had one of the fast times of the week in to win the tie-down roping champion title and the $100,000 cheque with a 6.7 run.

Tyler Waguespack won the steer wrestling with a 3.8, and Canadian Cody Cassidy won second with a 4.0, good enough for a $25,000 cheque.

Richie Champion reminded us that its not just his last name that makes him one, showing up with a 90.5 on C5’s Virgil for $100,000.

It was a three-peat for Big Valley’s own Zeke Thurston in the saddle bronc, he post a 92 point ride on Get Smart, while fellow Albertan Layton Green rode Wild Cherry for 91.5 and the second place cheque.

World champion Sage Kimzey matched up with Night Moves which was awesome to watch! He rode for 91 points, while Garrett Smith took a re-ride on Compton Bound and was a close second with 90.5 points for the $25,000 cheque.

It was great to see Mellissa Hollingsworth back on CBC commentating during the barrel racing and covering interviews with our rodeo athletes. She did a fantastic job, as did Ron McLean, Mark Lee, Bob Tallman, and Scott Byrne who was a new addition whom I hope becomes a main fixture over the ten days of Stampede next year.

Final four results below, as well as other 2017 Calgary Stampede champions.

2017 Wildcard Saturday Results

Calgary, AB- Due to J.B Mauney’s injury from his round win yesterday afternoon in day four of pool B, Canadian Brock Radford will be advancing to Championship Sunday to take Mauney’s spot.

After his 90.5 ride on Cowahbunga, Mauney was knocked out, stepped on and then transported to hospital. He sustained a dislocated right shoulder and will not be competing on Sunday.

From Wildcard Saturday we are seeing two Canadians advancing. One from the tie-down roping being Logan Bird who was second in the round this afternoon with a 7.9 behind Cade Swor who ran a 7.8.

The second Canadian advancing will be Curtis Cassidy who won the steer wrestling this afternoon with a 3.4. Behind Curtis was Ty Erickson with a 3.5.

In the bareback there was a three way tie for second place, but Calgary goes by money accumulated through out the rounds so J.R Vezain will be advancing with Steven Peebles who ha da 90 point spur ride on You See Me.

The saddle bronc riding the field was full of the Wright family. Only Ryder Wright will be advancing from the pack, alongside Cort Scheer to Championship Sunday.

It was a fantastic barrel race to watch this afternoon! Kassie Mowry started off with a 17.230, then we saw Jackie Ganter run a 17.120 on Baby J, and THEN Amberleigh Moore ran out of the pen, guns a’blazin’ with a 17.090 to win the round and move to Championship Sunday. Canadian Nancy Csabay finished fourth this afternoon with a beautiful run on Wicked finishing her stampede with a 17.320.

Finally in the bull riding it was Cody Teel who rode Double Down for 89.5 and Mike Lee who rode All About You for 86. Canadian Jordan Hansen finished third just a half point behind Mike Lee with a 85.5.

Calgary Stampede Day 2 Pool B Results

Tanner Byrne rode All Fired Up for 84 points to win the round, and tying him for first with J.B Mauney in the standings. Logan Bird tied Matt Shizowa with a 7.9 in the tie-down roping, which puts him in third in the standings for his pool, heading into day three.

Other Canadians cashing in from day two of poo B include Brock Radford who stayed on Early Departure for 83 points and a second place cheque worth $4,500. Cody Coverchuk hung in there for 80 points on Hair of the Dog good enough for a fourth place cheque worth $2,500. Radford is currently tied for fourth in the standings with world champ Sage Kimzey, each with $4,500 won.

In the steer wrestling it was Tyler Waguespack who won the round with a 4.2. He currently is tied with Bray Armes for second in the standings as we head into round three of pool B.

We had the pleasure of watching two of the greatest barrel horses lay down badass runs yesterday afternoon. Sherry Cervi and Stingray won the round with a 17.510 and some of the tightest barrels we have seen during this Stampede. Mister Consistency, Louie and Lisa showed us how its done running a 17.540 for a second place cheque. Lisa and Sherry are tied for first in the standings as we get into day three this afternoon. Kathy Grimes horse was quite ratey heading into the first barrel and Grimes lost balance and came off. Luckily she is ok, will regroup and get another crack at it this afternoon.

Canadian Nancy Csabay ran a 17.890 for a fifth place cheque, which keeps in the top four in the standings! I would LOVE to watch Nancy and Wicked running at Championship Sunday with Kirsty White and Racy!

Calgary Stampede Day 1 Pool B Results

Calgary, AB – Here we are, Day one of Pool B of the Lake Calgary Stampede.

First I would like for everyone to take a moment to tip their hats to the great Winston Bruce whom we lost last night to a battle with pneumonia. He was the driving force behind the Born to Buck program with the Calgary Stampede, and was an outstanding saddle bronc rider. Winston won the Canadian Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association title in 1957 and 1958, 1959 Calgary Stampede title, the Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1959, won the PRCA bronc riding world title in 1961 and ten times qualified for the National Finals Rodeo. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1989. Heaven is having the best rodeo this year. Rest easy Winston.

Matt Shizowa won the tie-down roping this afternoon with a 7.3. Half of the field received a no time including all of the Canadian contestants.

Bray Armes won the steer wrestling/water skiing with a 3.7. Canadian Cody Cassidy split a fourth pace cheque with Trevor Knowles with a 4.4.

Strong start for the bareback riders, seeing 80’s across the board, plus Peebles 90.5 ride on Yipee Kibitz. Canadian Orin Larsen split a 2/3rd place cheque with Kaycee Feild with an 87 point ride aboard Sacred Nation.

In the saddle bronc riding, we are waiting for one more re-ride which will happen tomorrow afternoon as they ran out of re-ride stock. Jacobs Crawley unofficially wins day one of pool B with an 86.5 point ride.

In the barrel racing we saw two of our legendary barrel horses make a comeback in the mud! Lisa Lockart won the round on Louie with a 17.68, and Sherry Cervi was second on Stingray with a 17.840 proving the mud at Calgary is nothing to be scared of! Our Canadian Champ Nancy Csabay ran a 18.050 splitting 3/4th with Amberleigh Moore.

JB Mauney won the bull riding this afternoon on Bomb Shell for 88 points, while Sage Kimzey wasn’t far behind with 86 points on Damn Straight. Brennon Eldred on Keslers Excessive Force for 81 points was the only other ride made, the rest of the field was bucked off.

PBR Global Cup & CFR To Go Head To Head

The City of Edmonton will be flooded with cowboy hats the second week of November, even more than years prior.

The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) finally announced this morning that the Canadian Finals Rodeo alongside Farm Fair International, will run the same dates as previous years at Northlands Coliseum & Northlands Park for 2017 and 2018.

Last month, Professional Bull Riders (PBR) announced they would hold the PBR Global Cup, at the new Rogers Place during this time, before the CPRA had announced any dates or location for their finals, which has been in Edmonton for the past 43 years.

Some may think there is not room for two large events to run in the city at the same time, others believe the more the merrier.

Either way you look at it, the western community will be quite prominent in the capital city, November 8th-12th this coming fall.
