Shelby Boisjoli CFR49

Shelby Boisjoli is heading to her very first Canadian Finals Rodeo, in fourth position with $17,727.54 in her jeans, aboard her great mare Onna, aka NO WIMPY TURNS (Whiz N Starlight out of a Wimpys Little Step mare ITS WIMPYS TURN).

What is your background with horses? How did you get started roping?
I come from a roping family, my dad taught us how to rope and my mom made sure we got to all the big ropings we could get to.

What is your horses story?
I bought Onna from Out Rider Ranch. She was in Training with Austin seelhof. My favorite thing about his horses is that I don’t feel like they have been pushed too hard to be Reiners. If they aren’t cut out for it, he doesn’t try to make them do it. So I love getting his rejects, they’re super broke and ready to try something new! I trained her in the breakway and she was super easy, I knew from the first day I rode her that she was special.

What is your go to saddle, pad and bit on your main mount? What do you like about them?
I ride a Perfect bit on all my horses. If I feel like I need to see more of a start like a 2 under set up I ride a small Kerry Kelly port. I like the Zone pads by Classic Equine

What do you do to keep a sharp mental edge in the game of rodeo? How do you stay motivated throughout the season?
I stay motivated through loving the sport. My days would look the same regardless of any of my goals. Iv always loved being outside and with my horses. The mental aspect of it changes all the time for me. Sometimes I need my butt chewed and I need someone to tell me to get my crap together and win something and other times it’s just me telling myself if it’s meant to be it will be.

Tell the readers something good that happened to you this season, other than placing at, or winning a rodeo.
I got married in May so it’s been a crazy year for me! Iv only been asked 8 million times when I’m changing my name. We got married then rodeo season took right off and it’s been a whirl wind since! But when it slows down I will go through all the things and change my name lol

What is the best advice you’d give to readers, about horses, competing or life?
The best advice I could give is to love what you do. You’ll always go the extra mile and pay extra attention to detail if you’re passionate.

What has been your most memorable run over the years, and what made it memorable for you?
My most memorable run over the years was missing at the American in the final four this past year. That one miss has taught me so much and gotten me so many more wins because I knew how to handle the situation. I felt like I was able to finish strong at a lot of rodeos this summer because of that one detrimental miss. I adjusted mentally the way I needed to for those situations and I think back to it a lot. It frustrates me to this day, so I use that to help me be better for the next time I’m in that situation. (I said I love what I do, I didn’t say I’m not insanely competitive) lol!

Who is your travelling partner, and what do you enjoy most about travelling with them?
My traveling partners were Kendall Pierson and Bradi Good and I liked that we were all kind of able to beat to our own drum over the summer and go to the rodeos that we thought we needed to. Sometimes bradi would be somewhere without Kendal and I and a lot of times that was while Kendal and I were chasing a Canadian qualification. We all tried to help each other and adjust the way we needed to for each of us to be successful. Sometimes it was hectic and sometimes we had a lot of moving parts. But having traveling partners that are understanding and supportive of what you’re trying to accomplish is vital.

Which of the other CFR Qualifiers horses would you swing a leg over if given the chance and why?
I would definitely ride my sisters horse “Capone” she’s done a great job with him and I’m super proud of her for the horse she’s built, and I know it would make my dad proud seeing me ride another great horse that he picked out and lost to his kids lol he’s always had a great eye for horses.

What products can you or your horse not live without on the road?
My maps app!! I’d be lost without it lol (Pun Intended)
