Babe on a Budget

Networking collaborations are a lot of fun because you can bounce ideas back and forth between creative minds, and come up with something magical!

I had wanted to do a fashion shoot that would promote a boutique and also showcase another talented photographer in Alberta, and that is exactly what we did.

B&B Boutique in Olds, Alberta is one of the most shopped at boutiques Alberta has to offer. They have been keeping Canadians of the west in the loop of western fashion since the spring of 2013,  and are known for their urban vogue with country vintage flare for the women who are looking for quality, vintage, chic clothes at an affordable cost.

That is what I like best about B&B, they’ve managed to keep the prices reasonable, even while bringing clothing up from the States with our dollar being poor. By doing this, they’re helping us barrel racers on a budget stay trendy at the rodeo cabarets, and in every day life.

B&B has everything from basic pieces that are perfect for layering, to something that’ll make you feel a little fancier and add a little pep in your step. Head over to the website to see ALL the new Spring outfits! (link below)

Tara McKenzie is a photographer from Rocky Mountain House  whose passion for photography turned into a full time job in 2010. McKenzie specializes in equine photography and all things that focus on the Western lifestyle. I first met Tara at the Grit, Glamour & Goals Event in the fall of 2016 in Red Deer, Alberta as she was our event photographer. After receiving the photos back from the event, and going through her portfolio online, I was drawn to her photography style, and knew I wanted to do a shoot with her in the future.

I told the Charlsey and Tara I wanted to go in the opposite direction of the barnyard or mountain shoot (which I love, don’t get me wrong) to try something different. After calling around, we were able to find the perfect setting.

The Hotel Arts is one of the finest hotels I have stepped foot in, and is located in the middle of downtown Calgary, Alberta, just minutes from the Calgary Stampede grounds. The stone walls and art around the hotel give it a western vibe, and you can’t help but feel like Sam Elliot might be around the corner for a Cowboys & Indians Magazine photoshoot. If you’re coming from out of town to visit Calgary, be sure to check their availability on rooms, or at least stop by for brunch at the Yellow Door Bistro, or dinner at The Raw Bar.

Lipstick & Cowboy Boots would like to give one lucky lady $100 towards a photo session with the fabulous Tara McKenzie. To qualify you must:

Evolution of Jeans

Oh the evolution of ‘western style’ jeans..

In the 80’s & 90’s we saw the high rise straight leg jeans, that doubled as both a bra and pants for riding.

There were the Rockies jeans with no back pockets, still doubling as a bra with how high of a rise they were. Check out these two patterns. “It’s Springtime in the Rockies!” #foreverflorals

Then the western jean Gods “blessed us” with wild coloured Wrangler jeans. I can recall in junior high school seeing bright orange, yellows and greens. Oh my..

Fast forward a bit and BAM, low rise pants everywhere. Which meant you better hike those up as high as possibly when you’re getting on your horse to make a run, or we all saw the crack of one another’s butts.

Then there were Miss Me jeans with fancy pockets, that everyone went crazy over. I tried to wear these but my thighs were too big, and when I’d walk they’d start to slide down… so I gave up. #thickthighssavelives

(Of course there were many other styles in-between, I’m just covering the most memorable ones.)

Most recently, (and by that I mean the last few years) girls started wearing the Flared Dojo by Seven For All Mankind. These jeans are not cheap, but they were and still are super trendy. You have to buy a used pair now as they no longer produce this style, and can find them used or $100 or less. I suggest hitting up your local second hand store, or The Bleacher Babes Closet on Facebook to hunt a pair down, if you’re looking.  This style has become a staple in many barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending and breakaway/team roping cowgirls closets.

Wrangler decided to join the flared leg pants party, and has come out with several flared leg jean styles. Some with a higher waist, others with a mid rise, and one style with the trending floral stitch work. My Canadian friends, at the moment I am only able to find such jeans south of the border. I purchased my pair from Lazy J Ranch Wear, and you can too right here. Canadian retailers might get them by the end of the year.. maybe!

Fashionista Inspiration Lifestyle

Honestly, sometimes the hardest part about writing is coming up with a smart title. Sing that song in your head while you read this blog post. (PS- its Changes by David Bowie..)

I wanted to blog about spring fashion, because I LOVE spring, but I figured I wouldn’t be the only one with this idea.. and what’s everyone going talk about? Florals, for spring?

The Devil Wears Prada, one of my faves. I couldn’t help myself. Well of course I love florals, I personally believe they’re an all year thing, but yes, wear all the florals this spring!

What else have I been seeing all over the fashionista map? “Blush Tones” aka. soft pinks… So I went out and found a really nice blush off the shoulder flowy shirt at H&M, and love the heck out of it. Of course I was distracted in line looking at their sale jewelry rack and also found a little faux pearl and gold necklace to go with it. Though turquoise would look freaking fab with this pink, I decided pearls were classy and cute too.

Know why I love this shirt? Its loose and flowy enough that you can’t even tell I ate cheesecake & had a coffee and was bloated as heck during this shoot! #realtalk

How about those white pants? I just love them! The thing about how you’re not supposed to wear white after labour day.. well that is one of the silly fashion rules that are from 100’s of years ago. White was for weddings and resorts, not dinner parties in the fall. Labour day became a federal holiday in 1948, so society over time adopted it as the endpoint of summer fashion.. Badass Coco Chanel, she bucked this trend and wore white year-round. Nobody tells Coco what to wear! But not everyone is as trendy as Coco, so this  “rule” continued down through many generations. #TheMoreYouKnow Well, though its spring and white is now technically “allowed”, I bought these jeans, and will continue to wear them past labour day. Try to stop me!

PS-these Jeffrey Campbell booties which came into the world last year, are SO VERSATILE! They come in 10 perfect colours, and are comfortable! They’re a little pricey, but you gotta invest in a good pair of shoes once in a while!

So why the silly Bowie title of this blog post? Well, of course spring brings change, but my own personal life has changed quite recently. I was laid off from my job I had been at for over six years. To say the Oilfield is struggling in Alberta right now, would be an understatement.. (well some of it may be picking up, fingers crossed) Now, before you send your condolences, hear me out. I am so delighted to have been laid off. Do you find that strange? I was miserable at my job. I had zero creativity (see lacking blog post content) I had no goals set, & I dreaded each day. I would have never left that job on my own cause it was a safe bet with benefits and a guaranteed pay cheque each week. Also, if I saw this as a negative, which understandably can be for many people, I would continue to be miserable. Instead I am seeing this as a positive! It’s all about perspective! I am a free bird and can do anything I want to. (though I currently don’t have a CLUE what that is.)

With all my free time I currently have, my dear friend Kathy Butkovic of EquisportsTherapy invited me to stay with her in Longview, Alberta and suggested working with Amanda Ubell Photography. I LOVE Amanda’s work, and she made this photoshoot so much fun! If you are in southern Alberta and looking for a photographer I highly recommend Amanda. She does phenomenal work and at a price that won’t break the bank! Check out her Facebook Page here, Instagram here, and website link is down below!

Pop The Champagne, See Yah Later 2016

Oh my Lanta,  where did 2016 go?! 2017 is coming in HOT! I am so looking forward to a brand new year, with new goals for both my website and my horse!

But, before we step into the new year, we get one last hurrah in 2016, and you bet I’ll be ringing in 2017 with some bright wild sequins! Velvet is the new hot “must have” and I’ve stayed away from it as I just didn’t find it overly flattering on me.

I bought the “Pop the Cham-Pagne” shirt from The Cosmic Cattle Dog Co. back in June as soon as I stumbled across it, as I knew I could use it for a fun occasion! The necklace is an old piece by Stella & Dot. The fabulous sequin skirt was everywhere during the Wrangler-NFR, but it hasn’t made too many appearances in Canada just yet. Typical; we see all the fun pieces last. I snagged one of the last ones from Gypsy Pearl in Texas! The belt, buckle & boots are all my Mother’s, and the sweet coat is my Dad’s, from many moons ago!

What are you wearing for New Years Eve? Crushed Velvet, Sequins, a jumper? Let me know by tagging me in your NYE pics with @lipstickandcowboyboots on Instagram!

Best Dressed – CFR ’16

The City of Edmonton is bringing us the 43rd Canadian Finals Rodeo in a weeks time. My dear friend Kathy Butkovic suggested that I do a little collaboration with Calgary’s own Ted Stovin from Everything-Cowboy regarding CFR Fashion for both urban and rural cowboys and cowgirls. Check it out.

Cassie: It feels as if only a few times a year, the people of the western community get to take off their work boots and slip into something a little dressier. Not that there is a damn thing wrong with work boots, dirty jeans and a dusty hat, but it does feel good to get dressed up and go out on the town.

It is known in the fashion world that trends come and go. When they come back they are often updated slightly and thrown back into the mix of things. This year we saw Vintage Western make a full come back. Of course there are a few trend setters who were ahead of the curve, but this trend finally caught up with the masses this year.

Vintage Squash Blossom necklaces have been, and will continue to be around forever. They are a statement piece that quickly grabs your attention. Bolo Tie’s made a comeback this year. Some adorned vintage pieces, others created new versions from painted and carved leather pieces, to large concho styles. Anything with turquoise goes, you really can’t go wrong. If you think turquoise is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Real squash blossom necklaces aren’t cheap, starting around $1200

Tooled, painted, and vintage leather accessories are everywhere. Have your Grandpa’s old belt? Wear it. Did a friend of yours paint you a leather cuff a couple years ago? Dig it out. Tooled leather whether it be a belt or cuff goes with every outfit. While you’re digging Grandpa’s belt out, ask him if he has any old style cowboy hats, ’cause you bet they made a come back.

If you are looking to get a new purse or bag, the number of leather artisans in North America is endless. In Canada I would recommend asking Kim Hodgins of Kim Hodgins Designs if she is able to whip something up for you. Paige Leather by Paige Albrecht is also always sure to please. If you have the money to spend and can handle the US dollar exchange, I would suggest looking into 26 Mile Collective, HD West Leather or Jennilie Leather.

Clothing wise, florals aren’t just for spring. I see floral prints on every item of clothing, right down to floral stitched patterns on jeans. Flare jeans have been back in the rodeo arena for a few years now, but more so now in the bleachers. Shirts that hang off both shoulders, or are cut out at the shoulders, turtle neck-style shirts, and dusters are everywhere. Suede type materials have also made a comeback with everything from dresses to pants. Lastly, fur vests and jackets are very appropriate for the CFR. They are another timeless look that you can pair with any outfit.

B & B Clothing Boutique in Olds, Alberta is currently one of the busiest boutiques in the western community. Owner Charlsey Whittemore, has new items coming in weekly, and has something for everyone. B & B will be in Edmonton during the Canadian Finals Rodeo, but be sure to get there within the first few days so you don’t miss out on getting the right size in the perfect floral dress, or one of their best selling lace maxi’s.

Though square toe cowboy boots have been a staple for everyone to wear with their jeans when headed to the city, you have more options than just that. Knee-high heeled boots pair nicely with leggings or dresses. Booties of every style will be everywhere you look in the city. My personal favourite are currently my Jeffrey Campbell Cromwell Suede booties with accents of silver on the toe and heel. While in Edmonton, and if you have the extra spending cash in your wallet, Poppy Barley has a beautiful collection of handmade leather shoes, my favourite being the Two Point Five ankle bootie. They source their leathers from a family run tannery, and pay attention to detail when creating their shoes; their pricing reflects this.

With fashion the options are endless. Style is a way of saying who you are, without speaking.

As always, what I have listed is only what I saw trending this year, and are mere suggestions if you are looking to spruce up the wardrobe. If your eye is drawn to something, pick it up and try it on. Wear what you feel comfortable in, and wear it with confidence.

Ted: For anyone that’s wondered, my main 100X black hat was built by Vern Elliott of Gold Springs Custom Hats in 2008. He’s re-done it a few times since but I’ve probably worn it 1,000 days or more in those years. Since then, I’ve burned through plenty of straw hats from the American Hat Company. Also, I work at Smithbilt here in Calgary in the winter. That’s where my 100X silver belly is from and we always have stock.

Prince William, Kate Middleton and Stephen Harper in their Smithbilt Hats in Calgary.

Quality is key here with all of these hats in my mind. That hat Vern made me is bullet proof. All those days, wear and tear have it not looking like it used to. It’s not the hat’s fault though or Vern’s, I’ve put it through about everything a hat can take. Same goes for my silver belly from Smithbilt which I’ve had since 2013. I’ve learned lots more about building hats since then and I think it’s time to build myself a new black one this winter.

It might cost $800 or more for a 100X hat. I’ve saved money by having a hat I can get fixed or reshaped when a cheaper, lesser quality hat won’t hold up that long or hold it’s shape as long. Investing in quality has paid off for me.

Ideally, it’s best to have someone shape your hat for you or get it fitted. Having one that’s too tight is no good. Don’t add any different hat bands either, there’s a reason the one that’s on it is there.

My favorite pair of boots in the past few years has been a black pair of square toe ostrich boots from Welsh’s I traded my friend there an ad for in 2012. Some of those exotic skins are tougher, like the elephant Tony Lama’s I bought back in 2009. Leather soles may not be ideal on the ice in our Canadian winters but they can be re-soled. Buying great Canadian, handmade boots like Boulet and Brahma pays off long term in this business. I wear both and actually have a custom pair of Brahma’s on the way from Winnipeg right now. Just in time!

Speaking of long-term. I’ve had a few pairs of my Wrangler Jeans last longer than I can fit them. It probably happens more than I’m thinking it might but they have been great jeans. New in the past couple years that I’ve noticed are the retro and advanced comfort styles. The advanced comfort jeans are a dream to travel in. If you haven’t tried them out yet, you might want to. They are like hanging out in pajamas all day.

With jeans in the cowboy world, I rarely ever leave my house unless they have been starched by Drycleaning by Dave here in Calgary. If you didn’t know, that’s what makes those awesome creases, the ones my mom made fun of me for. In our business it’s a cost that saves on the laundry time and lets us wear our jeans a lot longer when we are on the road. Dave even does pickup and delivery in Calgary. It’s handy.

Then comes the question, do the pants hold up the belt or the belt hold up the pants? My belt came from my friend Kathleen Brannon of Desert Sage Bead Art in Reno, NV. Kathleen and I met at a horse show in Vegas when I was in school there back in 2011. Kathleen made me the classiest belt of all time in the summer of 2013.

Some things that never change are the classic pearl snaps, also from Wrangler. My Dad never bought a shirt that didn’t have three snaps on each sleeve. Snaps for the win, but also for the win are the new advanced comfort shirts. The advanced comfort shirt I have fits better than any shirt I’ve ever had, it’s also denim by the way. Retro is back as Cassie says. Plus it’s formal here in Canada too, check out Aaron Roy and Ty Pozzobon, they are wearing the same shirt I’m talking about in competition right now.

Wild rags won’t likely ever go out of style here in Canada. Silk is what I want and bright colors are becoming more popular. If you don’t have one you might want to add one or two to your wardrobe. The same goes for a nice pair of lined deerskin gloves, made in Canada.

Don’t forget though our western retailers all carry t-shirts, day-to-day shoes, hoodies, ball caps and much more.

Another cool thing about this business is how many people have jobs or businesses doing other things besides rodeo or bull riding. I know a lot of people who are farmers and ranchers but then I know a pilot and Earl Klapstein who owns Eddie’s Men’s Wear on Calgary Trail in Edmonton. Like anything else I’ve mentioned in this story, it’s likely going to cost you some money but it’s going to be high quality stuff that lasts.

In the past couple year’s I’ve bought a couple jackets from Earl that I used every week on the road this fall for the PBR’s Monster Energy Canada Tour. Earl and his crew have made sure I got the right fit and right piece. They haven’t gone un-noticed either. Someday when I grow up I guess I’ll have to get some more stuff from him. If you’re in the market, Earl is a huge supported of our way of life in this country. Supporting folks like him help make everything go around.

G3 Events Thankful for Support of Night at the Marquis

RED DEER, Alberta — Ladies from the western community packed the house at The Harvest Centre at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday night. A sold out crowd enjoyed shopping from some of Alberta’s best western style boutiques, a fashion show, and guest speaker Amberley Snyder.

Snyder is a professional barrel racer who was in a rollover accident in 2009, that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Just months after the accident she was back on a horse, more determined than ever.

In a room full of nearly 400 women, one could hear a pin drop as Amberley captivated the audience with her story.

Trish Fossum Granger drove three hours with two excited young ladies.

“My daughters best friend was in a car accident when she was four years old,” Granger said. “Hanna has overcome many obstacles over the last nine years. She rides horses, ski races, shows her 4-H steer just to name a few. Her dream was to meet her inspiration Amberley Snyder. Thanks to the G3 Event’s, not only did she get to hear Amberley speak, the amazing ladies who organized this event made sure that she was able to meet her.”

Wendy Bunney from Edmonton is already looking forward to next year.

“Everyone I spoke to kept saying what a stellar event it was and the hosts should be commended for pulling it off! Amazing, fun night, and my credit card took a few hits, but I got some great deals! Sure hoping this is a repeat next year!” said Bunney.

Charlsey Whittemore, Owner of B & B Clothing Boutique was delighted to be a part of the event.

“Inspiration, friendship, and shopping describe the event to a T,” Whittemore said. “Not only did guest speaker Amberley Snyder captivate the entire room but the opportunity of being surrounded by other successful boutique owners was an inspiration on its own. The ladies definitely came to shop! On behalf of all of the boutiques we can’t thank the event organizers enough.”

Taylor Cox came with nine other women, who were all looking forward to a night out.

“Grit, Glamour and Goals-Night at the Marquis was a very well-organized, fun paced, exciting girl’s night out that myself and many others look forward to attending again in the future!” Cox said. “They also had wicked door prizes and great wine! Love my baseball cap and who doesn’t love free wine?!”

Event organizers had decided to create a scholarship for a deserving recipient. Ladies were encouraged to write an essay explaining why they deserved the scholarship and how they are helping the sport of rodeo. Entrants had to be an active member of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association and be enrolled in a minimum six week course.

This years Grit, Glamour & Goals scholarship recipient is Brittainy Smith who attends the University of Lethbridge taking her Bachelor of Science majoring in neuroscience.

“Two of my good friends, Hope Skoocdopole and Nikki Vanderlee were with me watching the live feed of the scholarship announcement,” Smith said. “I was beaming with joy and excitement after the incredible words from the ladies presenting the scholarship. My friends gave me a hug and said I deserved it. To be honest I cried a little from and the cheering and love I felt. I would love to thank each one of the organizers for putting on such an amazing event for women in the western community. I have received other scholarships but this one will be one of the most memorable.”

Organizers of the show, Brittany Forsyth, Rayel Daines and Cassie Hausauer are thankful for the support of the western community for this event. Moving forward, they have some serious planning to do to for their next event.

“Overall, there is nothing I would change about how our first event went,” Forsyth said. “Attendees expressed their happiness and everyone was tickled to be there. G3 has a lot of wheels turning already and you can definitely expect more to come from us.”

To view more photos of the event, check out G3’s Facebook Page.

About G3 Events:

Grit, Glamour & Goals;  G3 Events was created by Brittany Forsyth, Cassie Hausauer and Rayel Daines in the spring of 2016 with the goal in mind to create events which celebrates the modern western woman, to bring people together to encourage, celebrate and support one another, and for a night of fun and motivation.  G3 has also created the Grit, Glamour & Goals Scholarship. Fashionista On The Record

Catching up with Callaway

Just over a year and a half ago I interviewed Paige Callaway. We talked about Pursue Victory, what inspires her, and our favorite lipsticks. I decided to do a follow up as exciting things are unfolding in the later half of 2016 for Paige.

New Pursue Victory Collection – Released Summer 2016
“Pursue Victory is created for functionality and having that as the priority of the garment, it can be somewhat limiting to a creative brain like mine.  So when the creative designer side of me gets involved it seems limited.  I have always loved a proper style and I saw a lot of it when I was in London a few years back. That block style of solid arms and collar with the pattern bodice has a very UK vibe in my opinion. I think it’s also very translatable to fashion here. I think it is classy and lady like to have a collar cuff shirt buttoned up with a nice necklace, or pearls.  A majority of the inspiration comes from that.”

Word on the street is you’re collaborating with C5 Rodeo?
“This new line called C5 Brand is a really unique concept. I am working with C5 Rodeo, which conveniently means I work with one of my favourite people, Gillian Sheilds. We relay important information up to Vern and I often ask Tyson questions pertaining to the stock. The whole C5 crew is a great bunch of people. We are also working with an artist in Calgary on some exclusive artwork.”

How did this fab collab come about!?
“I honestly don’t remember its original starting point. When Gillian and I get together, we feed off each other coming up with some pretty out of the box ideas for the world! I think we kicked it around a few times and talked about how cool these horses were. We discussed the opportunity for them to have more recognition for their ability and become house hold names and have their own cheering section! They have amazing athletic ability, they travel all over North America and lots of a list of accomplishments just like any other athlete. They wear the C5 Brand and this is an opportunity to people to become fans of the bucking horses and wear C5 brand as well. Just the people wear t shirts, and the horses, well obviously!”

What will be available for purchase?
“We are initially launching t shirts and caps. The t shirts will feature three of C5’s horses; Virgil, Make Up Face and Rockstar. They are some pretty awesome animals and also all of them are grey. So it makes for a pretty rad squad to kick things off. We will have a t shirt style for each of these three horses featuring custom artwork from a Calgary artist. We worked to play on their names and personalities so people know what they are like. Horses have as much personality as people and I think its cool learning about these horses. That’s what we will start with and then from there who knows, I would love to do something with jean jackets and Pendleton maybe . . ”

When will the line be available?
“The plan was to launch Oct 1st, but I think with the Cinch finals starting the 30th, we will be pushing to launch it then! We will have the clothing initially for sale on social media and will quickly be moving onto the C5 website for sales!”

I keep seeing #Paige1912. Spill the deets!
“I wish lived during the old west days and rodeoed back at the turn of the century. My great grandpa competed in the first Calgary Stampede in 1912 and that was the start to such a monumental event. In those days the ladies trick rode and rode broncs, and often were as tough or tougher then the men competing. Going through couturier school I became fond of the proper tailored look found a lot in London. Not only do I love the style of proper suits and tailoring for both men and ladies, I respect the work involved in them. In 1912, Coco Chanel opened her first shop. It was the first year someone wore her “little black dress” and also the first year her millinery (hat) business started to grow. As much as Chanel has become a current fashion icon, she was a catalyst in woman fashion being designed for function, not just looks. I am not sure if I would have rather been in London, or in Calgary in 1912, but what a time to be alive!

The vision of the brand in the most simplistic form is what my closet would have looked like if I was here in 1912. Its the old west and proper London style tailoring come together for a modern look.

Paige 1912 is a cool line, and its coming in different phases. I am working with Paige Leather, who’s style already fits so well with the line of clothing. She does purses, belts and other leather accessories. Paige is great to work with and a go getter! I like that. I am working with Smithbilt Hats on a fashion hat line which is fun and exciting. Smithbilt is such a reputable company it is very cool to be collaborating with them. I am also putting together a line of jewelry and fortunate to have a good friend, Rachel Clark, who is working with me. Rachel has great style, something I have always admired and raided her closet for. She also works closely with a factory in Mexico and has knowledge in leather and this type of production. The jewelry line will be pretty unique working with different aspects of what this factory can do and where our imaginations lead. There is another one or two potentials I will collaborate with, but this is all I can disclose right now.”

When can we expect this line to be out for purchase? Take my money.
“The line Paige 1912 is going to come in two phases. The first phase will be in Vegas during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  We will have have an array of neck rag tops and kimonos, more casual long sleeve tops, Pursue Victory shirts for both ladies and men. Paige Albrecht of Paige Leather will bring her hand made beautiful belts, purses, wallets and some awesome fringe clutches. Paige has a great eye for style and has some new designs of purses she is working on. Smithbilt will bring the Paige 1912 line of fashion hats in addition to some one of a kind hats. There will also be the Paige 1912 jewelry line available. So it will be a great array of fashion for everyone at a variety of price points. I am pushing things to release some jewelry before we go to Vegas. It would be nice to give everyone a sneak peak of whats coming.

The second phase of the brand will come next summer. We are planning an event in the Calgary area that will feature the launch of the whole clothing line in a fashion show, followed by a bronc riding and a concert. That I would say, will showcase a much more expanded line in terms of clothing. In other words, I have a lot of sewing to do!”

The other important thing I like about Paige 1912, is we are working with artisans, skilled people who have mastered their trade, whether it be leather crafting, or millinery (hat making), I think its important to showcase talent and with that comes quality. Its also pretty neat that, other then the jewelry, everything is made in Canada. Not many brands can say that!”

A booth in Vegas is pretty awesome! What can we expect in Vegas?
“We will be at Mandalay Bay this year, and yes, odds are we will have champagne at the booth! I am putting together some other cool things for the booth like autograph signings and a sale on Canada Day. We have lots of Canadians heading down for the finals this year, which is so awesome! So it would be nice to highlight that talent along with the Canadian talent in the booth! Come by and see us! I like to have fun, so I am sure there will rarely be a dull moment around the booth!”

So much has happened in a short amount of time. What are your goals for each of these ventures moving forward?
“I have recently been working through my strategy plan for Pursue Victory and a lot of marketing documents for Paige 1912 and C5 Brand. It has really had me thinking about where things are going with them and also, what I am doing. Each of the brands has a unique path of their own and fortunately they meld together in some aspects as well.

C5 Brand is such a cool project. Its really taking things to the next level for marketing and gaining awareness of the bucking stock. I think its a very forward move, and I respect Vern for giving Gillian and I the go ahead on this. The goals with C5 Brand are of promote these animals like the professional athletes they are. I have quantitative goals set for the brand through out the initial phases, as one does when launching something. At the end of the day if a kid watching the rodeo hears Virgils name and gets excited to watch this horse buck, I would say mission accomplished!

With Pursue Victory lots of it has been systemizing the business to run more efficiently and run with less involvement. I am working on a subscription portion of the company, something not new to the shirt business but potentially new to the western world. I figure there is about 20% left till this company is a smooth running machine! I look forward to that day and hope by the start of January that is the case!

Paige 1912 has so many moving parts, its almost like launching multiple brands. I have a real skill for deciding to do things to the max. Somedays it benefits me other days it induces stress. There will be a lot of hustle for the next couple months to get ready for Vegas. I have sewing to do in addition to marketing, booth set up, working with Smithbilt and working with Rachel and the factory. There is no doubt it will be lots of work, but I love that type of work. I have a time line of things to accomplish to make sure I am prepped and ready for that ten day Vegas marathon, both physically and mentally!

On a personal level, while working to prepare Paige 1912 for Vegas, launch C5 Brand and systemize Pursue Victory, my big picture is to work with awesome people to make great clothes. Hopefully along the way I make time for myself and keep my sanity! Its a balancing act for sure. Between my day timer and my lists things are manageable. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way! I thrive on doing this many things and working on deadlines. Maybe I will think different December 11th!! The only thing I cant juggle into my day timer is the arrival of my nephew. He is expected to come around the end of November, which leaves me a tight window between Agribition and NFR to meet him! So I hope the stars align for that!”

LCB Fashion Must Haves

Whats trending right now in the rodeo world for fashion? Lets get to it!

Chokers – Yes, I mean the chokers we wore in the 90’s. They are back! If you don’t want to buy a typical choker, girls are also seen wearing a longer bolo tie style with a nice pendant, wrapping it around their neck once or twice.

Turquoise – This is timeless in my eyes. Turquoise jewelry will always make a great statement piece, and if its vintage it likely has a story behind it. Rings, Cuffs, Necklaces and earrings; its everywhere and should be all over you!

Dusters – Dusters are usually long sleeve and longer in length, just “dusting” the ground.  Often we see floral patterns, but anything goes! A duster is generally made from a light flowy fabric. They look great paired with distressed skinny jeans and heels!

Graphic Tees – Whether they have witty words written on them, an band name, or destination, they are great to pair up with accessories, skirts, jeans etc. Easy to dress up or down!

– This trend hasn’t gone away yet. Fringe EVERYTHING. Again, find something you like and just wear it! If it catches your eye, but you have that little voice in the back of your head telling you no, dont listen to it! Just do it!

Booties– Booties, booties, booties, booties rockin’ everywhere… (did you sing that in your head?) Currently suede booties of any color are seen everywhere. I prefer neutral tones rather than a super bright color, but hey,you do you! Dancing in booties with a little wedge or thicker heel gives you the ability to dance the night away! I am also seeing a lot of the lace up gladiator sandal styles, as well as thicker strappy heels with thick cork or wooden heel and platform.

Hair Trends – Half Buns. No, this is not a man bun! Instead of pinning half your hair up, put half up in a higher bun, with loose waves or straight hair left down. Just try it, you may really like it!
Everyone loved a long mane, but many ladies have chopped their locks for shoulder length easy-to-manage locks! If you still have luscious long hair, I am jealous, as mine does not grow past my shoulders, ever!
Casual loose waves, and random braids in your hair are also showing up all over.

Hats – There are many different styles and brands of hats trending at the moment. My fave brands right now are Greeley Hat Works, War Bonnet Hat Works, Charlie One Horse & Brixton! Palm Leaf hats, and nice felt hats aren’t just for the arena! The best part is they look great with almost any outfit, and you save yourself time by not having to wash, dry and style!

Warbonnet Hatworks wife Brooklyn, and Miss Katy Hall wearing their fabulous hats and turquoise! I LOVE their outfits & originality!

Serape – Serape blankets, shawls and wraps were originally brightly colored wool blankets which both men and women wore in Mexico. This day and age, you see the serape color pattern on every type of material, in many forms. Dresses, Western Shirts, T Shirts, Skirts, Dresses etc. There are many different color combos, find one you like, on an article you want, and wear it!

Wrangler – It’s not throwback Thursday I swear, but fashion always seems to come back, just in a new and improved way. Wrangler currently has a few shirts, crop tops, and jeans being sold in Urban Outfitters!

Squash Blossom Necklaces – These are still a hot item. There are many versions available that won’t make you break the bank! Always check out Etsy, and Facebook groups like The Bleacher Babe to see if anyone has one for sale.

Statement Purses & Clutches – If you are handy with leather, make yourself a dang clutch with your own personal flair! If you’re like me, and don’t know where to even start when it comes to leatherwork, have a look around and see what you can find. Clutches and purses that are hand tooled, have fringe, or are just different are seen everywhere. If you see something you love, BUY IT!

Always keep in mind that everyone is different. If you dislike the 70’s inspired boheim hippy look, then don’t dress that way. This is simply what I see and like that is currently trending in the world of fashion. Whatever you decide, the best accessory you can wear is a smile on your face, beaming confidence and happiness!

Fashionista On The Record

Thunderbird Brand – The New Rodeo Shirt

Sitting in the front lobby of Treasure Island during the 2012 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, I was waiting to pick up a saddle pad from #bossbabe, Sydney Fuller. A year prior I had purchased a Martin Saddle from her and we had since become good friends.  Over that year I had watched (via Facebook) Fuller sell many outstanding barrel horses, handling it all with grace and professionalism, as if she had done it for years; which she had. She began consigning barrel horses at the age of 14. One time in particular really stood out. There were over 200 (not exaggerating) rude comments regarding one high priced, high powered gelding. Sydney did not pay any attention to the negative, instead only replying to those seriously interested to the horse, and sold him at asking price, no problem whatsoever. She means business.

She came down from the elevator with a huge smile on her face, shoulders back, exuding confidence. Her sugar skull and cheetah print tattoo uncovered for all to see, radiating a give no F*cks vibe; When you meet people like Sydney, you can’t help but feel good in their presence.  I was mesmerized.

Many phone calls and texts later, the next time I would see Syd was California. We packed up the ponies and headed to Las Vegas for NBHA Super Show. Though we were in Sin City together, I didn’t see much of her after night one. We had gone to the M Resort Spa and Casino for a nice dinner and wine, then back to South Point where too many Tomato Beers & Washington Apple shots were consumed. Little did I know, Sydney is extremely allergic to alcohol..(but she had to show the Canadian a good time)  Somehow she managed to run 3 horses over the weekend, and thankfully she survived.

Had Miss Fuller not survived our evening out in Las Vegas, Thunderbird Brand would not be a blowing up, and the rodeo world would not be as bright. Thankfully, that is not the case!

Syd reppin’ one of her own creations, likely sippin’ on some Dr. Pepper!

How did Thunderbird Brand start? What was the original vision for the brand?
I started out with makeup bags and purses and eventually learned enough to make the shirts I had been planning on making from the beginning , I plan to keep expanding as time lets me.

What made you decide to start making rodeo shirts?
I have always wanted to design clothes I have had ideas lurking it the back of my mind for quite some time and decided now was the time to make something of those ideas and start building my empire for my family.

How many shirts have you sold so far?
I try not to count and honestly had no idea until you asked me this question! I went back and give or take, I have sold over 58 shirts.

All of your shirts are hand sewn by you in California correct?
Yes ma’am! I am a 1 woman show. I design ,pin ,cut , sew, ship every shirt by myself!

What is the average price for a custom made shirt?
Average price would be $150. (Worth every penny!)

Who is sponsored by Thunderbird Brand in the barrel racing world?
Each one of my girls is special in her own way and brings something amazing to Thunderbird Brands table.

Sidney Forrest is my best friend and part of my inspiration.  I always had a vision of dressing her at the NFR -when she makes it she will be decked head to toe in Thunderbird Brand.

Stephanie Miller was the first person before I started this that I asked to be part of my team she is one of the most positive uplifting humans I have ever met , I hadn’t spoke with her in ages and tracked her down on Pinterest to approach her!!

Leah Baize and I crossed paths at a barrel race here in California. She has an insanely nice horse that she’s pro rodeoing on and we have since become friends. She’s an awesome representation of Thunderbird Brand.

Laremi Allred is my all around’r. She does multiple events and has such a rad style. She travels a lot and gets to show Thunderbird Brand off all over which is nice!

What inspires you to create such fun pieces?
I have a wide eccentric view on art. I love tattoos and colors and expression – I have a southwestern soul but I’m also pretty ranchy. Anything that speaks to me on a daily basis gets put into my shirts in one form or fashion.  It may not be today or in a month, but it eventually ends up in a shirt.

What is your favorite pair of cowboy boots and lipstick?
I have an old pair of Leopard Boulets I scrounged out of the trash ! Haha true story. My favorite lip stick is D for Danger from MAC!

If you could have lunch with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
I’m very family oriented so even though I eat lunch with my family every day I wouldn’t change it for anyone .

If you are looking to purchase a Thunderbird Brand shirt to stand out from the crowd, check out the Facebook Page or Website and shoot Sydney a message! Make sure your creative juice is flowing at max capacity! If you’re waiting on purchasing a long sleeve shirt, there are T Shirts, hats, and bags also available for purchase!!
